They probably didn't go with Ford becasue they didn't want this to be to closely asociated with Indiana Jones, although they are both bible based. This would also be a reason to not go with Conery since he played Jones' dad.
I agree with Hank's he is one of my all time favorites.

Tom Hanks is one of the best actors alive. I also thought Sean Connery said he wouldn't be doing anymore movies??
